The ideal way to move is to let a full-service moving company pack and unpack your belongings for you. You may prefer to pack your own things so you can declutter during the process or save money on your move. If you pack your own belongings, consider buying moving boxes. These boxes are designed to stack well and protect your items from damage. Discover five common types of moving boxes you may want to buy.
Book boxes are generally small boxes and made for small, heavy items. They have solid construction so you can pack them full of books and not worry about the bottom falling out. Generally, the heavier the item, the smaller the box should be. Book boxes are perfect for packing books and small kitchen appliances.
You wouldn't likely want to pack a medium or large box full of books because the books would be too heavy. The boxes might fall apart or be too heavy to move around.
Medium all-purpose boxes will hold nearly anything you want to move as long as it fits in the box and isn't too heavy. You'll probably want several all-purpose boxes in both medium and large sizes. The large boxes can hold linens, clothing, and other light items. You can pack a large box full of light items and still lift the box safely.
Medium all-purpose boxes are good for heavier things, such as kitchen equipment, toys, and household decor. Just add foam or air pillows to pack the box fully without leaving empty cavities that allow the items to shift. Add wadded paper to the top so the top folds down without sinking in. Also, make sure the tops fold down flat so all the boxes stack safely.
If you're wondering how to protect your expensive mattresses and box springs during the move, you'll find mattress boxes to be a good choice. These come in different sizes to fit different sizes of mattresses. Your mattresses will be fully enclosed in cardboard and protected from dirt, rain, and scratches.
These boxes can be used to pack other oversize items as long as you fill the empty spaces with foam so the items don't shift. You can buy similar but smaller boxes for packing wall pictures, mirrors, and flat televisions. Some of these boxes come with padding and others need to have padding added.
If you want to move your items while they're hanging on hangers, buy suit boxes or wardrobe boxes. Suit boxes are smaller versions of wardrobe boxes. They both have bars across the top of the box for hanging clothes. This saves you from having to fold all your clothing for boxes.
You won't have to worry about fragile fabrics being wrinkled or damaged since they'll be on hangers throughout your move. Wardrobe and suit boxes make packing your closet easier and faster too.
It's time-consuming to pack dinnerware and glasses since each piece needs to be wrapped individually. You can protect your fragile glasses and dinnerware further by using divided boxes. These have individual cells that keep glasses separated. Some have dividers that keep plates from touching each other.
Plus, moving boxes with fragile items are often marked with signs showing which end is up and to let the movers know fragile items are inside. Besides divided boxes for fragile items, you can also buy lamp boxes and boxes for electronics that are made for fragile belongings.
