Common Moving Injuries

September 28, 2022

Moving can be exciting, especially if you plan to move to your dream city, house, or office. However, you risk sustaining injuries if you are not careful or lack the right skills and equipment for an efficient move. Discover the common injuries when moving, their causes, and the ways to avoid the injuries.

Back Injuries

The most common injuries when moving are back injuries. The injuries usually result from moving heavy furniture and appliances without proper techniques and equipment.

Back injuries may range from a simple strain that will go away after some rest to severe injuries like a herniated disc. So, how do you protect your back when moving?

Avoid Bending

You don't have to bend when you pack. Instead, squat when you pack boxes. If you must bend, always use your legs and not your waist. You may also place your items on the counter and pack from there.

Leverage Furniture Moving Equipment

To move large and heavy pieces of furniture, use moving furniture equipment such as dollies and furniture sliders. The equipment can help you reduce the strain on your back by allowing you to push or pull the items with your legs.

Knee Injuries

This injury mainly results from too much pressure on the joints as you lift heavy items. However, the injuries could also result from hitting your knees on a hard surface or sharp edge when moving.

If you spend a lot of time packing or cleaning on your knees, use knee pads. The knee pads will protect your knees from the impact of hitting the floor and also reduce the pressure on your joints.

Avoid heavy lifting by asking for help or using furniture sliders.

Muscle Injuries

Moving involves a lot of body movements. All this pressure on your muscles can lead to strains. Besides strains, you may sustain muscle cramps, whereby you experience sudden and severe pain in your muscles. You are also at risk of muscle contusion, characterized by bruises.

To avoid muscle injuries, start with warm-up exercises. The exercises will help to prepare your muscles for the strenuous activity ahead. Also, take breaks between packing and moving to give your muscles time to relax. Then, ask for help, use equipment to move heavy objects, and don't forget to hydrate.

Finger and Toe Injuries

These injuries primarily result from crushed fingers and toes. For example, you may sustain finger and toe injuries when heavy objects fall on them or when you accidentally slam your fingers or toes into a door.

To avoid finger and toe injuries, pay attention to what you are doing when moving. For example, do not place your fingers or toes between furniture as you move them. Also, do not try to catch falling items with your hands. Finally, use gloves when packing to protect your fingers from cuts and bruises.

Cuts

With all the packing, moving, and unpacking, you are at a high risk of cuts, scrapes, and abrasions. These injuries mainly occur when handling sharp objects such as knives and scissors.

To avoid cuts, cover your skin with long-sleeved shirts and pants. And wear gloves primarily when moving items that may have sharp edges.

Now that you understand the possible moving injuries, causes, and prevention, you are better positioned to have a safe and seamless move. The most important trick is to entrust the moving tasks to a reputable moving company. These specialists have the skills and equipment for the job.
